How It All Fits Together: The Elements of Art

GICLEE135.jpg

The last week of February, our donation-based art classes will bring all of the elements of art together! In this self-portrait by Chuck Jones, painted when he was a young man on cardboard with oil paint, he brought together all of the elements of art. You’ll be able to see how they work together in your own artwork this week.

  • Monday with Ben Olson: The Still Life Grand Compilation—Looney Style

  • Tuesday with Lee Fairchild: Observational Drawing—Putting It All Together

  • Wednesday with Darrell Park: Creating Your Master Puzzle Piece

  • Thursday with Mike Funt: The Comic Through Line—Creating a Whole Sketch or Routine

  • Friday with Naylene Justis: Putting the Animal All Together

The theme for March will be: Heroine Comic Art! We will be celebrating women artists for Women’s History Month, watch for details next weekend!

Chuck Jones in Your Homes: This Week -- VALUE!

GICLEE154.jpg

The links are live for this coming week's donation-based creativity classes. You'll be learning about VALUE, one of the most important elements of art. It's what gives your subject dimension and space.

As you can see in this watercolor by Chuck Jones, he's used value to not only define the landscape, but to also create a dramatic story arc--one that nature produces 24/7.

Classes begin at 2:30 PM PST and last for an hour; each day's class hosted by one of our talented teaching artists. Join us!

Chuck Jones in Your Homes: Back to Basics!

BUS QUEUE LONDON 72dpi w copyright.jpg

WELCOME TO OUR FEBRUARY 2021 THEME MONTH, BACK TO BASICS!

In 1960, Chuck Jones and his wife, Dorothy, traveled to Berlin to visit their daughter, Linda and her husband who were stationed there. Whenever and wherever Chuck traveled, he always took art-making supplies with him; blank-paged journals of various sizes, pencils, pens, watercolors, pastels, oil paint, brushes--well, you get the picture. The watercolor above, titled "Bus Queue--London" was done on this trip to Europe. Can you see how the elements of art work together to make this image so very special?

OUR CLASSES this month will be a mix of subjects that involve working on our fundamental art skills through a variety of exercises and methods.

We are so thankful for all of our students! In order to be able to keep offering these free lessons we are switching to a donation model. We suggest $5-10 per class, but anything you want to give is graciously appreciated. In addition to all of our free classes we are offering both private lessons and semi-private lessons. You can make a donation by clicking here.

Each class line is a link to that event with information on the class and supplies you will need and the Zoom link. Links go live HERE the Sunday or day before the week begins.

"Form" is the first week's theme. This week, each of our teaching artists will explore form as a fundamental basic of art-making. Next week, we'll tackle "Space", then "Value" and the last week in February, we'll put all of the seven elements of art together, exercising your genius!

Chuck Jones Big Draw with the Windy City Bulls

The backyard experience, an Illinois 501(c)3 nonprofit, with the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity—Chicagoland, in cooperation with the Windy City Bulls brought the Chuck Jones Big Draw experience to Sears Center in Hoffman Estates on January 4 during which the Windy City Bulls played the Westchester Knicks.

The Chuck Jones Big Draw featuring Looney Tunes, presented by Zenni was a special event that benefited the backyard experience, which serves after-school arts education programs, healing arts in healthcare programs, visual articulation for special needs, and creative events in our communities. Highlights of this special evening included a Gus T. Bull & Marvin the Martian Sculpture Giveaway, Looney Tunes theme art stations throughout the concourse, as well as Looney Tunes music & cartoons. Looney Tunes-themed jerseys will be worn by both the Windy City and Westchester teams and will be auctioned off to benefit both the backyard experience and a New York-based art education organization.

A similar event took place on December 27 at the Westchester Knick’s arena in White Plains, NY, in a game against the Windy City Bulls. Photos from both events below.

The last photo in the gallery below shows Windy City Bulls president, Brad Seymour, left, with Andrew Turner, Board member of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity; Ben Olson, president of the backyard experience, and George Vroustouris, executive director of the backyard experience in Schaumburg, Il.

Work-In-Progress -- Audacity

The artwork keeps arriving in great floods of brown boxes or hand-delivered, or sent digitally, or by pelican just like a newborn baby. Well, the last may not be true, but the art we're receiving for this year's Red Dot Auction is, without exception, the most wonderful and dynamic group in Red Dot history.

For instance, _______ _______, has contributed this stunning figure study, something that would surely have pleased Chuck Jones who was the consummate figurative painter and draftsman. There's no denying that his classical training in not only media, but also the figure greatly influenced his animation art. A lesson for all.

Which artist will you discover at this year's Red Dot Auction? Registration and tickets at CharityAuction.bid/reddotix.

Your participation, either as contributing artist or bidder at the silent and live auctions, help support the targeted programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Our focus on providing critical thinking skills for school-age children, teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum, and seniors who see the value in staying creative must continue.

Red Dot Auction IX Call for Artists!

Dear Artists and Friends of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity,

This past year the Center has seen tremendous growth throughout Southern California and around the nation:

  • We now provide after-school enrichment programs in over half of the 24 Irvine public elementary schools.

  • We received a grant from the Newport Beach Arts Commission to provide our signature brain health program, Food for Thought, to local seniors with early onset dementia.

  • We continue our work with young people on the autism spectrum through our collaborations with Autism Resource Mom and the Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

  • We have an amazing partner in Chicagoland whose Chuck Jones Center for Creativity programs have consistently been oversubscribed.

Preparations are underway for the Ninth Annual Red Dot Auction benefiting the programs of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, scheduled for Friday, May 17, 2019.

Today we're writing to ask you to donate a work of art to this year's Red Dot Auction To register to participate,  click here.

HOWEVER, you may choose to work in any size canvas, substrate or 3D media you'd like to provide yourself

You may prefer to work on paper or another substrate and that's fine, as long as we can mount it to the 12" square canvas for presentation the night of the event. The artwork should be signed on the reverse so that bidders at this silent auction will not know who has created which work of art.
